China through the Lens of John Thomson: 1868-1872

Opening in November, this exhibition is devoted to images of China by Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921). Born in Edinburgh Thomson first travelled to Asia in 1862, where he set up a professional photographic studio. Fascinated by local cultures, Thomson returned in 1868, settling in Hong Kong. Over the next four years he made extensive trips to Guangdong, Fujian, Beijing, China’s north-east and down the Yangtze. This exhibition is drawn from his time in these regions.

In the early days of photography, when negatives were made on glass plates, a cumbersome mass of equipment was required but Thomson was nevertheless able to capture a wide variety of images. His works present the human aspects of life in China through the extensive record of everyday-street scenes, rarely captured by other photographers of that era.
After returning to Britain, Thomson took an active role informing the public about China, through illustrated lectures and publications. In 1920, he wrote to Henry Wellcome - pharmacist, philanthropist and collector - wishing to sell his glass negatives. Thomson died before the transaction was completed, and Wellcome bought the negatives from Thomson’s heirs in 1921. The images in this exhibition come from the Wellcome Library’s collection in London.

Timed to co-ordinate with Chinese New Year celebrations in 2012, the exhibition will include over 50 stunning images with a wide variety of themes in China including people, architecture, domestic and street scenes. A selection of traditional Chinese clothing and accessories from the Library’s own collection will also be on display.

Dublin City of Science 2012

In 2012, Dublin will be the self-declared ‘City of Science’. This ‘year of science celebration’ will consist of a programme of over 160 science-related events that cross the worlds of art and culture.

A programme of events has been compiled to break down perceptions of science and related subjects. These events are targeted at the general public and vary from a science themed picnic to and orchestral piece from the World Science Festival in New York. The programme, which will be announced shortly consists of photographic and art exhibitions, several theatre pieces, film festivals, tours, trails and treasure hunts, street performances, science buskers, puppet performances, large-scale interactive installations, experiments, science carnivals and public talks, debates and workshops and even a fashion show!

by Hugh Leonard

Low Price Previews from Thursday 2nd February
Opening night Tuesday 7th February

“If you ran into me Da with a motor car, he'd thank you for the lift.”

Hugh Leonard’s hilarious comedy Da explores the relationship of Charlie, a successful playwright, with his adoptive father. In this semi-autobiographical play set in 1960s Dublin, we find Charlie in his childhood home just after Da’s funeral. While he sorts through his father’s things, he is visited by Da’s ghost, who stubbornly refuses to leave the house or his son's mind. As Charlie revisits his past, we get to share in the tender, frustrating and very funny moments that defined the complex relationship between father and son.

Directed by Toby Frow. Set and Costume Design by Ben Stones. Lighting Design by Paul Keogan. Music and Sound Design Denis Clohessy.

Cashier no.9

Is there a Belfast sound..? Van Morrison… Stiff Little Fingers… Divine Comedy… Cashier No. 9 sound nothing like any of these, but they’re as innovative and different as anything that’s come from the city.

They could be from California, or Manchester, or any number of places, having been variously compared with The Byrds, Beach Boys, Stone Roses, Pavement, CSN, The Flaming Lips and many others. Yet with their rich vocal harmonies, bold guitar textures and supremely catchy melodies, they’ve created a sound
that’s indeterminably none of these yet equally vibrant.

Rammstein

After three years it finally comes, the long awaited follow-up album, “Night Electric Night”, to the success of “Termination Bliss”. This time the swedes have done it in an explicit way, and the “Deathglam”-genre they started sounds more Deathstars then ever; it’s dark and hard yet huge and warm - paradox that works for them, as usual.
Nightmare Industries takes a drag on his Marlboro Light and leans forward.
- This album is the very mirror of our last years in this manic environment that this band exists within. The album is tough, black, yet seductive in it’s expression of the urban destructive nightside. Also changing structures and using even more varied elements have strengthened and deepened the richness in the music.
